API Innovation Center Report Spotlights Cross-Sector Dialogue on Drug Shortages

This week, the API Innovation Center (APIIC) released its newest publication, Cross-Sector Insights Into the Drug Supply Chain: Strengthening Domestic Resilience Through Public-Private Partnerships. This report captures insights from a closed-door roundtable convened by APIIC in August, where leaders from government, pharmaceutical manufacturing, health care systems, and retail pharmacies came together to discuss building a sustainable U.S. drug supply chain.

What makes this paper unique is that it surfaces the necessary conditions for collaboration: predictable demand, transparency, long-term contracts and rewarding reliability, quality and patient care. These priorities will shape discussions at APIIC’s third annual plenary on November 5th in St. Louis, MO, where a broader cross-section of stakeholders will build on this foundation to drive actionable solutions.

What do you consider the next steps for a sustainable U.S. drug supply chain?

  • From my perspective, building a sustainable US drug supply chains must begin with through understanding and mapping of the supply chain, to enable proactive responses to drug shortages. Based on the identified vulnerabilities from this mapping, actionable solutions such as multi-sourcing, partnering, adoption of advanced manufacturing technologies, incentivizing domestic manufacturers etc. can then be implemented.
