Compaction properties of melt coated coarse drug particles

Abstract
Xylitol and stearic acid were applied onto the surfaces of coarse particles of paracetamol and acetylsalicylic acid by continuous multipurpose melt technology. The effect of melt coating on radial and axial tensile strength was studied and compared to that of dry mixing of paracetamol and acetylsalicylic acid with fine particles of the excipients. It was found that radial and axial tensile strength were increased to a greater extent with continuous multipurpose melt technology than with dry mixing. The reasons for the increased tensile strength associated with continuous multipurpose melt technology was explained in terms of improved distribution onto the drug particles.
